Chapter Three

In the heart of the Everfree Forest, a bear's large frame moved with surprising grace through the thick foliage, each lumbering step a deep thump of above-ground life. His paws crunched on fallen leaves as his massive body wove through trees like a sentient boulder set in motion by some unseen force. Shafts of sunlight broke through the vaulted ceiling of leaves, illuminating patches of ground in halos of golden warmth.

Unbeknownst to him, the young Proto-Changeling Princess watched from a distance, her eyes filled with wonder. To her, the bear was no ordinary creature of the forest. Through her vision, colored by the magical lens of her heritage, he appeared as a bear composed of stardust and cosmic magic. Sparkles of light danced along his fur, a shifting aura of deep blue pulsing around him, as if each fiber of his being were imbued with celestial magic.

As he neared his cave, the moment of decision arrived for the Princess. Her elders' counsel echoed in her ears: stillness of breath, focus of mind, unity with the natural world. These were traits she had often found elusive, given her impulsive disposition and restless spirit. Yet the thought of disappointing her dormant community willed her into action. Her pulse quickened, betraying her inner turmoil, but she willed her form to transform, to blend with the very essence of the cave that the bear called home.

With immense effort, her body morphed into the shape of a rock, her once white coat now a mosaic of grays and browns. The transformation was difficult, but she managed it, settling into her new form just as the bear lumbered toward the cave's entrance. Her breath stilled, her vibrant green eyes dimmed to the inert gaze of mineral existence, and her entire being reduced itself to a mere pebble in the vast geological outcropping of the cave.

Alright, focus, Xen. You're a rock. A super normal, blend-in-with-the-background rock. Gosh, why is it so hard to keep still? Maybe if I think about stuff, really important stuff, I can keep my shape.

We are the original, the Proto-Changelings, direct conduits of Equestria's magic. We are not like the other changelings. We are way bigger and supercharged with magic. We do not just shape-shift; we can be mountains and rivers. It is like we are a part of Equestria itself. We have been around since Discord’s time. That is basically forever.

Oh, wait, the bear's sniffing closer. Deep breaths, deep breaths. Be the rock.

My ancestors had this great friendship with Princess Celestia and the old rulers. We were basically besties. Because of that friendship, Princess Luna was not totally alone on the moon. She was protected by our Emperexx, the moon itself. We are that connected to Equestria, from the land to the sky and beyond. That’s a lot of responsibility, huh?

Uh-oh, he's really close now. Okay, refocus. You are a rock. A rock with a job to do, like all Proto-Changelings. We are not flashy magicians; we keep the magic in Equestria stable. If we mess up, who knows what could happen? So, no pressure or anything.

Wow, it is kind of humbling. Makes me feel tiny and huge at the same time, you know? Like I am part of something way larger, something that has history, purpose, and meaning. And here I am, just trying to keep my shape and not mess it all up.

Alright, he's sniffing the rock right next to me. This is the make-or-break moment. Can I be a rock, just a plain, uninteresting rock?

Yes, I can do this. For all the Proto-Changelings who came before me, for all the magic of Equestria, and for the starry bear who is more than meets the eye. I am Princess Xen, and I am a rock. At least for now.

The bear's inquisitive snout hovered over my rock form, inhaling deeply as if savoring the rich aroma of ancient minerals and earth. Then it happened. The tender graze of his whiskers swept over my surface, and a sensation like fizzy stardust burst through me. I tried to maintain my focus, but it was ticklish, unbearably so.

With a shimmering ripple of magic, Xen's form burst into a kaleidoscope of colors, her transformation abruptly halting. There she stood, the luminosity of her spiraled white mane framed against the darker backdrop of the cave. Her luminous green eyes, like twin moons floating in a night sky, widened in bewilderment. A blush manifested like a dawn's light, starting at the bridge of her snout and spreading outward, casting her alabaster features in a hue of soft rose.

Oh, for Celestia’s sake! He found me! I was a rock, a really good rock, and then, poof, I'm me again. Why did it have to tickle so much? This is so embarrassing.

Okay, Xen, think. You can transform. Just focus and... ah, who am I kidding? I can't even keep still for one minute, and now I'm full-sized in front of this strange bear. My heart's pounding so loud I can practically hear it echoing in this cave.

Wait, did he just say "Hello?" He talks? That is so cool, but not the point right now, Xen. I'm cornered, literally. Why did I ever wander so far into the Everfree Forest? The Elders would be so disappointed if they were awake. But they are not, so I have to handle this myself.

I can't transform, can't run, and here I am, the Proto-Changeling Princess, cornered by a talking bear in a cave. Maybe it is not so bad. Maybe he is friendly. But what if he is not?

Okay, breathe, Xen, breathe. This is just a moment, and I am part of a much larger story. A story that has been told for generations. Maybe, just maybe, this moment will be a turning point in that story. For now though, what do I do about this bear who is staring right back at me?

Amidst this inner turmoil, I focused on the bear's aura, a radiant nebula of astral hues. It met my fledgling magical field, and something extraordinary happened. The proximity felt like a tidal wave of stardust and dreams. The magical currents did not merely pass through me; they entwined with the bear's own energy, creating a magical circuit powered by Equestria's very soul. He became a channel of magical energy, and I felt myself not draining, but resonating, amplifying the ambient magic that engulfed us both.

With a swirl of iridescent magic, her form shifted once more, this time into a graceful little bird. Her feathers glistened with the latent magic that suffused her very being. She took a deep breath, flapped her wings, and ascended into the air, leaving behind the cave and the shimmering bear.

And so she flew, her new form a mere silhouette against the backdrop of Equestria's twilit canopy. The beat of her wings matched her racing heart, and her small form vanished among the trees.

Where is the path leading me, over the horizon, beyond the dawning twilight? Whatever it is, I will face it. I am Princess Xen, daughter of Proto-Changelings, with a past to honor and a future to forge. This is only the beginning.

---

In a secluded clearing surrounded by tall, ancient trees, the Cutie Mark Crusaders looked up at the night sky with awe. Stella pointed out stars they had learned about in class, and Chimera giggled at the pretty lights. They were excited, to say the least. They had gathered all the supplies they needed: a telescope, charts, blankets, and some treats from Sugarcube Corner.

The stars twinkled overhead like scattered diamonds, and the wind blew gently through the foliage. They were on a mission, one endorsed by Twilight Sparkle herself, to possibly meet a Stellar Beast, a creature of celestial magic.

A little bird watched the Cutie Mark Crusaders and their friends with keen eyes. Scootaloo felt its gaze and couldn't help but blush. "Hey, don't look at me like that," she said nervously.

Apple Bloom chuckled. "Aw, are ya too chicken around a little bird, Scoots? Maybe Stella here can talk to it, just like Fluttershy!"

Chim nodded encouragingly. "It's worth a try. Who knows, it might just be your special trait!"

Sweetie Belle agreed. "Exactly! Stella, you and Fluttershy are so alike. Maybe talking to animals is your thing too. Besides, it's all about finding our special traits and earning our cutie marks, right?"

As Sweetie Belle mentioned cutie marks and special traits, the bird's eyes seemed to spark with an almost intelligent curiosity. The very atmosphere in the clearing shifted. The magical energy rose to a new intensity.

Unable to contain her excitement and wonder, the bird's form shimmered, morphing into something, or rather somepony, else. Princess Xen stood before them, her coat shining white even under the night sky. Her eyes glowed green, swimming with curiosity. She was taller than all the young ponies but wore a youthful air. Despite her adult-like height, she seemed to be around their age. One detail stood out clearly: there was no cutie mark on her flank.

"Forgive my earlier disguise," she said, a faint blush painting her snout. "Maintaining that form requires focus, and I find it hard to stay calm when there are new ponies, special traits, and... cutie marks?"

Apple Bloom's eyes widened. "Wow, yer a Proto-Changeling? Ah've read 'bout y'all in the library!"

Scootaloo, the adventurer in her kicking in, was fascinated. "You're from an ancient magical race. That's so cool!"

Sweetie Belle looked at Xen thoughtfully. "You don't have a cutie mark either. Are you interested in getting one? Is that even possible for a Proto-Changeling?"

Xen looked at the young ponies before her. "That's precisely what I'm wondering. The idea of a mark that represents one's unique abilities is intriguing. We Proto-Changelings don't have cutie marks, but the concept of finding one's unique place in the world appeals to me."

Her thoughts turned to her responsibilities, to the need to find her own way in this world. Her guidance was limited; not many of her species were awake, and certainly not enough to entertain an active mind like hers. They could give her general advice, but it was like talking to a glacier. The only response she heard back in any timely manner was her own echo.

Apple Bloom couldn't contain her excitement. "Well then, let's help ya find out! If a cutie mark is 'bout findin' yer special talent, then we're the experts at tryin' to find ours!"

Scootaloo grinned. "Yeah, plus, think of how awesome it would be to get a cutie mark as something as legendary as a Proto-Changeling!"

Sweetie Belle nodded, her voice gentle yet filled with conviction. "I think this could be a journey of discovery for all of us. The quest for finding your place is quite universal, isn’t it?"

Princess Xen felt a warmth spread through her, her magical essence resonating with the young ponies' words. She might have been taller and part of an older, magical race, but in that moment, the Proto-Changeling Princess felt a kinship with these earnest, adventurous fillies.

"Then let me join you," Xen declared, her eyes twinkling like the stars above. "I don’t often have the chance to speak to anypony."
