I wasn’t able to attend the USITT 2026 Conference in person, but I embarked on a “virtual” field trip through research. The assignment was to explore three companies or technologies from the Stage Expo that intrigue me. I chose to dive into (1) theatrical lighting with high color rendering (and a related fascination with monochromatic lighting), (2) audio solutions for blending a remote player into an in-person D&D game (drawing on theatre mic techniques), and (3) large-scale 3D fabrication in theatre (how stage productions use tools like 3D printing and CNC routing). These topics intersect with my personal hobbies, from lighting my LEGO displays to running hybrid D&D sessions to tinkering with a multi-material 3D printer at home, so I’ll be writing about both my personal interest and the professional tech insights I discovered. Let’s jump in!
