The Three Autonomic Systems
Taylor’s portal is regulated through the sympathetic, parasympathetic, and enteric branches of her autonomic nervous system. These systems remain connected to their familiar biological roles, although the portal gives them a new organ and a much larger energetic resource to coordinate. The sympathetic and parasympathetic branches communicate the broad state of the body: whether Taylor is facing an immediate demand or is in conditions where maintenance can be prioritized. The enteric-like plexus around the boundary has a different role. It interprets those body-wide requests at the portal itself and decides what the local organ can safely do.

Taylor’s conscious choices sit above that hierarchy without directly micromanaging it. Choosing to rest or eat gives the system a very different expected workload from choosing to run from danger. Fighting or deliberately forcing a surge raises the requested output still further, while protecting someone can keep that emergency priority active even when Taylor herself would otherwise withdraw. Her brain can establish the goal; the autonomic layers translate the goal into physiology.
